Summer Anime Watch List 2015

On Thursday the first episode of Gangsta aired, heralding the start of the summer anime season.

Looking through various blogs and news sites I’ve picked up a few anime series I would like to try out.

Here they are:

1. Gangsta.

Gangsta, Manglobe

In the city of Ergastulum, a shady ville filled with made men and petty thieves, whores on the make and cops on the take, there are some deeds too dirty for even its jaded inhabitants to touch. Enter the “Handymen,” Nic and Worick, who take care of the jobs no one else will handle. Until the day when a cop they know on the force requests their help in taking down a new gang muscling in on the territory of a top Mafia family. It seems like business (and mayhem) as usual, but the Handymen are about to find that this job is a lot more than they bargained for. [from MyAnimeList]

My housemate is a fan of the Gangsta. manga, and she was super excited when it was announced they would be making it into an anime.

We watched the first episode together on Thursday night and I really enjoyed it. I especially loved Nic’s character – rare to see an animanga character with a disability such as deafness. The use of sign language was very cleaver.

Alex seems like an awesome strong female character – looking forward to seeing her kick ass.

I was very happy to find out that the manga is written by a woman, and discovering that she keeps a whole rack of guns next to her drawing desk. Classy lady.

Looking forward to watching more!

2. Rokka no Yuusha/Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers

When the Majin awoke from the depths of darkness, the deity of fate chose six heroes and bequeathed them with the power to save the world. Adlet, a boy who proclaims himself the strongest on Earth, has been selected among the Rokka no Yuusha (Heroes of the Six Flowers), and he goes to the rendezvous point — but seven have gathered there. The heroes suspect that someone among the seven is the enemy, and the initial suspicion falls on Adlet. [from MyAnimeList]

I think the main character in this anime – Adiet – looks very interesting and his role in the premise.

And since this fantasy is a seinen I’m interested to see how it’s going to differ from all the shounen fantasy anime I’ve watched such as Sword Art Online.

3. Charlotte

Very few adolescent boys and girls have an onset of special abilities. Yuu Otosaka uses his ability unbeknownst to others in order to lead a satisfying school life. And then, a girl named Nao Tomori suddenly appears before him. Their encounter reveals the destiny for wielders of special abilities. [from MyAnimeList]

I have a feeling I’m going to find the fan service in this anime a bit much. Looking through images to use for this post there were a lot that indicated the level of fan service in this anime is going to be very high. I hope I am proved wrong.

4. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime/Snow White with the Red Hair

Shirayuki was a young girl born with unique apple-red hair. She meets a famous but foolish Prince Raji, who falls in love with her at first sight and orders her to become his concubine. With nowhere else to go, Shirayuki cuts her hair and escapes to a neighboring country. While traversing through the forests, she meets a young boy, Zen, who helps her after she boldly cures his wounds but then gets poisoned by an apple given to Shirayuki. Meanwhile, Prince Raji sends out henchmen to search for her. What will happen to Shirayuki? What is Zen’s true character? A refreshing fantasy story between an optimistic heroine and a prince who constantly stays on her watch. [from MyAnimeList]

I haven’t watched much shojo anime – rather, I haven’t watched much compared to how much shounen I’ve watched. I often find shojo irritating, especially when there is a love triangle…

But there’s a lot of buzz surrounding this anime and I’m hoping it’s going to be more like Akatsuki no Yona than Skip Beat. I do love a strong female character who has a strong plot line that doesn’t revolve around her love life.

5. Chaos Dragon: Sekiryū Sen’eki/Chaos Dragon: Red Dragon Campaign

The story takes place in Huanli (the Year of Dazzling) 3015. Donatia and Kouran, two countries fighting for supremacy, are causing the world to be torn apart due to the constant war. Amidst the strife is the island country Nil Kamui, which has lost its independence. Red Dragon, the guardian god of Nil Kamui, goes out of control. Will the island country be able to regain its independence? [from MyAnimeList]

I’m interested to see what this anime is going to be like.

The story behind the Chaos Dragon light novels is an interesting one: five notable character designers sat down and played a role-playing fiction game, and the results of their sessions over six days created material for the seven-volume light novel series.

The characters look interesting, and the clips I’ve seen have intrigued me.

6. God Eater

God Eater, Ufotable

Set in Japan in the year 2071 where the world has been mostly destroyed by mysterious monsters known as the Aragami. An organization known as Fenrir was made to exterminate Aragami using weapons called God Arcs which is made from the cells of an Aragami. Those who specialize in exterminating Aragami are known as God Eaters. Originally God Eaters had one type in which their God Arcs can only keep gun form or blade form, however a new type has been discovered that can switch between gun and blade form. Since then, they have been classified new-types and the previous as old-types. [from MyAnimeList]

Another high fantasy anime, but this one is based on Bandai Namco’s PSP action game series God Eater, so I’m a little dubious about what the quality of the plot is going to be like. Again, like all the anime on this list, it looks cool!

What anime are you planning to watch this summer?

    1. Both were amazing. Akagami no Shirayuki was cute. If you watch Gangsta be prepared for an opening ending, since they ran out of episodes to finish airing the arc. I’m planning to read both of the mangas now, since I want to find out what happens. Doubtless it will be a while before we get a second season of either.

      1. Hmmm, that’s a bummer. One of my pet peeves with anime are unsatisfying finales. It’s not too bad if the source material is being translated though as you can continue to follow the story that way.
