At some point I’m going to do a ‘My Top 5 Animanga Villains’ post. My top villain from that post is different to this one, because he’s a manga only villain.
This one is number 2 on that list…
OK. I’ll try not to reveal too much for those of you who haven’t seen Shippuden…
Those of you who have seen Shippuden will know that there is some…discrepancy around calling Itachi a villain. For the sake of this blog post let’s just call him a villain.
But it’s for that discrepancy that I love him and think he’s the best anime villain.
Villains who are straight out bad and have no other side to them are no fun.
Itachi is all kinds of fun, because it’s only after his fight with Sasuke do we find out his true motives and backstory.
Before then you think of him as a straight out villain, but are confused when he helps out Naruto, or goes easy in a fight.
I love Itachi’s complex character and think he has the most tragic backstory out of all the characters in Naruto…and that’s saying something!
And this moment between him and Sasuke is one of the most heartbreaking in the series.
And he is the reason why Sasuke is the way he is.
He is the person who shaped Sasuke’s character, who made him strive to be the best in his class, to run away from the Hidden Leaf Village, and develop that dark side to him.
Itachi is a typical Uchiha, who does what he does for love. And it’s that loves that not only destroys him, but also destroys Sasuke.
Itachi has a profound impact on the series and the characters in it. He’s just the best villain, because there is a method behind his madness that makes you sympathize with him.
